Before Treatment

Textblock:

  • Eight signatures detached from textblock

  • Loose sewing on the top two signatures on the remaining textblock

  • Missing sewing at second sewing station on the top 11 signatures remaining on the textblock

  • Missing page before title page

  • Failing tape adhereing pages along the gutter

  • Failing tape adhering torn page fragments together

  • Loose page near the end of the book

  • Multiple tears and folds among the pages

Binding:

  • Spine lining and mull pulling away from signatures, skinning the fold

  • Cloth tears and missing materials on the cover

  • Corner delamination and exposure

  • Stuck on headband missing

  • Mull has torn away at the left internal shoulder joint, causing detachment of left board from the textblock

Treatment

  • Tape removal and adhesive residue removal of the taped pages - strangely, the printed ink tested fugitive with any solvent based liquid, ruling out the use of solvents for the removal process. Therefore, removal was done with heat and erasers.

  • Resizing of the weak, damaged pages, including the fragments from the taped page

  • Repair of the fragments using toned tissue and wheat starch paste

  • Paper repairs and infills using toned tissue and paste

  • Resewing of the missing sewing station, loose signatures, and removed signatures onto the textblock mimicking the machine sewing

  • Hinging of torn page

  • Paper hinge insert for missing page

  • New spine linings and conservation headband

  • Cloth consolidation, repair, and infilling

  • Board corner consolidation and recovering

  • Board reattachment and internal hinge repair

  • Board book shoe for support and display
